Short-sightedness, or myopia, is increasing throughout the world. Family history, ethnic background, environment (living indoors, in cities) and carrying out near tasks, such as screen use, have all been linked to the development of myopia. However, there is no clear evidence to suggest that screen time alone is the direct cause. There is however good evidence to suggest that children who spend more time outdoors are at lower risk of developing short-sightedness.
Wearing glasses does not make your eyes ‘weak,’ or ‘dependent’ on glasses. In most cases, glasses will actually help to relieve strain on the eyes and to relax the eye muscles. If your child needs glasses at the moment it does not always mean that they will need glasses for the rest of their life. We will give you details specific to your child when we examine your child.
Wearing glasses as prescribed can help your sight to develop normally and achieve its full potential. Recent evidence has shown that under-correction of certain types of prescription can in fact accelerate changes in the eye. This is why regular checks are important so that if needed we can update the prescription in your child's glasses.
You should always encourage your child to wear their glasses as instructed by our clinic.
